All About Language Proficiency

For both English and Turkish-taught programs, applicants are required to submit a proof of language proficiency. This page explains how exemptions work and what isn’t accepted. It’s a summary—please always confirm details in the School of Foreign Languages Directive on Exemption & Equivalence.

Language Requirements

English-Medium Programs (Taught in English)

If your applied program is in English, you must show academic English proficiency. Depending on your scores/background, you may be exempted from English prep.

How to Get Exempt

  • APEX: Take Atılım University’s own English proficiency exam.

  • External exams: You can submit accepted tests like TOEFL iBT, PTE Academic, or YDS/YÖKDİL. You can check the minimum score requirements in the official regulation.

What Doesn't Count

  • IELTS Scores as they are not accepted as proof of language proficiency in Turkey.
  • Exam results that are expired.

  • Home/at-home editions of language exams.

How to Get Exempt

  • You must present a TÖMER certificate demonstrating a proficiency level of at least C1 in Turkish.
